The government has provided waste management equipment to 50 islands in the Maldives.
The agreement in this regard was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Environment and Energy this afternoon, by Minister of State for Environment and Energy Mohamed Ibrahim on behalf of the government, and Managing Director of Winland Private Limited Ismail Rishwan on behalf of Winland Private Limited.
The equipment were officially handed over to the islands by Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim. They were accepted by senior officials of the councils of those respective islands.
The equipment were provided to 45 islands in four northern atolls, and five islands in Alifu-Alifu atoll and Alifu-Dhaalu atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony, Thorig said that the total cost of these equipment, provided under the Maldives Environmental Management Project and the Ari-Atoll Solid Waste Management Project, is MVR 8 million.
He assured that the problem of waste management will be solved in these 50 islands following the supply of this equipment.
He added that efforts are underway to increase waste management capacities in Addu Atoll and Fuvahmulah.
