Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim has said that MVR 3.9 million has been spent so far this year, on supplying water to islands that faced water shortages.
In response to a question by Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz at the parliament today, the minister said that similarly, last year, MVR 3.89 million was spent from the state budget for this purpose.
Thorig said that while the cost is an issue, the government is more concerned about the difficulties endured by the people as a result of water shortages - a problem faced by many islands during the dry season every year.
He said that water was supplied to 82 islands in 2013, and to 75 islands so far this year.
He assured that efforts are underway by the government to find a sustainable solution to the problem of shortage of water.
