Court hears testimonies by defendant

The court has heard testimonies by four witnesses presented by the suspect, charged with the murder of Ahmed Nizar in Laamu Gan, at Juvenile Court yesterday (24 August).

The Spokesperson for Juvenile Court said that the next hearing will be held on 31 August, during which testimonies will be presented by the police officers who attended the crime scene.

This will be followed by hearings on 7 and 14 September, when the State will call its witnesses to the witness stand, said the spokesperson.

Testimonies were also presented by four eyewitnesses at a hearing held on 18 August.

Ahmed Nizar, from Woodland, Thundi, Laamu Gan, was found dead around 2:23 a.m. on 15 July 2013 on Sinaaee Magu in Laamu Gan. Wooden planks and iron rods used to attack Nizar were found near his body by the police.

The suspect has been charged under Article 6 (a), with reference to Article 2 (a) of the Terrorism Prevention Act.

Article 2 (a) of the Terrorism Prevention Act states that the act of killing or causing bodily harm or carrying out such actions with the intention of creating fear or terror or with a political motive, shall be construed as acts of terrorism.

Article 6 (a) states that anyone found guilty of an act of terrorism resulting in the loss of a life shall be sentenced to death or life imprisonment or banishment, and the same penalty shall apply to those found guilty of complicity in the crime.
