Thulusdhoo murder trial to begin today

Less than a month since the day of the murder, the Criminal Court has scheduled the trial against Mohamed Niyaz, 35, for the murder of Ali Shiham in Kaafu Thulusdhoo.

The trial will begin at 12:00 p.m. today.

Shiham was stabbed near the beach in front of his house around 7:00 p.m. on 31 July, and soon died from injuries at Thulusdhoo health centre. Mohamed Niyaz was taken into custody on the night of the murder after he voluntarily approached the police and confessed to the stabbing.

The investigation was completed and sent to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office seven days later, on 7 August, and the PG Office filed murder charges against Niyaz on 11 August.

Chief Inspector of Police Abdulla Shatheeh has said that the investigation had revealed the victim had earlier accused Niyaz of stealing, and that Niyaz had confessed that the murder was an act of retribution.
