The case against Mohamed Niyaz, who stabbed and killed Ali Shiham in Thulusdhoo last week, has been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office today, a police media official has said.
Mohamed Niyaz, 34, was taken into custody on the night of the murder, Thursday, 31 July, after he voluntarily approached the police and confessed to the killing of Ali Shiham.
Ali Shiham was sitting near the beach in front of his house when he was stabbed in the stomach around 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. He died soon after from injuries at Thulusdhoo health centre. Reasons for the stabbing are unclear.
Police recovered a knife from the crime scene on the night of the stabbing. They also collected evidence from the residence of Mohamed Niyaz on the same night, in the presence of the suspect. The Shiham murder investigation is the second fastest criminal investigation concluded by the Maldives Police Service to date.
