Independent Institutions Committee has made the decision to revise parliament regulations to allow holding newly formed independent institutions accountable to the Committee.
Following the enforcement of new parliament regulations on 2 March 2010, Auditor General’s Office, Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC), Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Media Council, and Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) are among those institutions which cannot be held accountable to Independent Institutions Committee.
The Independent Institutions Committee decided last Wednesday to submit the issue to Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid, as the Committee does not have the authority to make this decision. They also made the decision to present this issue to the Parliament from the Speaker’s desk.
However the issue has not yet been submitted to the Speaker.
Parliament regulations state that the institutions which can be held accountable to the Committee are Anti-Corruption Commission, Election Commission, Judicial Service Commission, Civil Service Commission, Human Rights Commission, Police Integrity Commission, and Prosecutor General’s Office.
