The election of a lower court judge to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), scheduled for 20 July, has been indefinitely postponed.
Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) said the decision was made following numerous requests from judges to delay the election until the end of Ramadan. A new date for the election will be announced later, an official from the department said.
With the power of appoint, dismiss and take action against judges, the JSC is the primary judicial oversight body of the State.
Judges who have applied for the JSC seat are; Senior Magistrate at Faafu Magoodhoo Court Abdul Sattar Sulaiman, Drug Court Judge Zubair Mohamed, Drug Court Judge Mohamed Easa and Civil Court Judge Ali Naseer.
