A man has been arrested for breaking into former president Mohamed Nasheed’s office located on the first floor of Gaafu Nilaa Veli, Male’.

Police said that the break-in took place around 4:00 a.m. and that a 20-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident. The man was arrested near Fiyaathoshige, a house on the same block where Nilaa Veli is located.

An official from MDP said that although it is thoroughly locked after office hours, the office does not employ security guards. The robber had broken a window to get inside the office, according to the police.

Police said that inspection of the suspect revealed a computer mouse, a printer and a wallet believed to be stolen from the office, along with some tools that can be used for burglary. The suspect, who has been arrested on two previous occasions, has an existing record of robbery, police said.

A tweet from former president Mohamed Nasheed’s official twitter account today thanked the Maldives Police Service for their efforts following the robbery.

Police have advised the public to be wary due to an increase in robberies during the month of Ramadan.
