Furqan Mosque inaugurated after six years

Furqan Mosque, which has been under construction for the past six years, has been inaugurated by Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed today.

After inauguration, the Vice President participated in the Asr prayer at the mosque.

The mosque can accommodate about 3,000 people, including a separate area for women at the ground floor.

The MVR 20 million project was first awarded to Vimla Construction Private Limited in 2008. The agreement with Vimla Construction was terminated in 2010 as the work was not carried out as per the agreement.

In 2011, Maris Construction Company Private Limited was commissioned to complete the remaining 95 percent of the construction work within 15 months.

The project was however further delayed, and was not ready for inauguration until today.

Speaking at today’s inauguration ceremony, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that the project, which cost MVR 21 million in total, is the most expensive mosque construction project undertaken by the government to date.
