The government has signed an agreement with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for a project worth MVR 21 million, to clear the overfilled Garbage Disposal Area 1 in Male’.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim and CEO of MTCC Ibrahim Abdul Razzag, at a ceremony at Ministry of Environment today.
The same area was cleared by MTCC also back in March 2013.
Speaking at today’s ceremony, Thorig said that the completion period for the project is three months.
He said that disposing garbage to this area would be prohibited until the work is completed and a temporary disposal area to be used until then, will be announced by Male’ City Council.
The Environment Minister said that discussions are ongoing with City Council regarding creating a management plan for Garbage Disposal Area 1.
He also cited City Council and said that the garbage barge presently at Vilimale’ Ferry Terminal will be moved to another location in the near future.
