An unsupervised four-year-old girl was saved from drowning in Artificial Beach by an off-duty police officer on Friday.
The child was rescued by Police Corporal Shaira Shafeeu, an officer from the Forensics Service Directorate, around 6 p.m. on Friday evening.
Police said that Shaira and her child were standing on the steps to the beach when she saw the four-year-old girl drowning and asked a friend to keep an eye on her child and jumped into the water to save the girl. Shaira rescued the girl from the water, administered first aid, and hailed down a police jeep on Boduthakurufaanu in which the girl was transported to the hospital.
Maldives Police Service Family and Child Protection Department is investigating the case. The four-year-old victim is reported to have survived without injury.
