Philippines is through to the AFC Challenge Cup finals after beating Maldives 3 to 2 in the semi-final match played at the National Football Stadium in Male’ tonight.
First goal for Philippines was scored by Phil Younghusband in the 19th minute. Maldives equalized in the 37th minute with a goal by Mohamed Umair.
Philippines’ second goal was scored by Jerry Ruben Lucena in the 39th minute and the second half ended with 1 – 2 in favour of Philippines.
Maldives earned a penalty kick in the 53rd minute when captain Ali Ashfaq was fouled inside the penalty area. However, Philippines goal keeper Roland Muller made a successful dive for the ball and Ibrahim Fazeel failed to place the ball in the net.
Maldives scored its second goal in the 66th minute, bringing the score to an even 2-2. Assadhulla Abdulla directed the ball into the goal with a back-heel touch from a corner by Mohamed Umair.
The match went onto extra time of two 15-minute halves to determine a finalist. Philippines scored its winning goal in the 114th minute. The goal was scored by Christopher Robert Greatwich.
Philippines will play the AFC Challenge Cup final match against Palestine on Friday, 20 May, at 9:00 p.m. at the National Football Stadium in Male'.
Maldives will next play against Afghanistan in the third place match scheduled for Thursday, 29 May, at 9:00 p.m. at the National Football Stadium.
