Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has said that the investigations into the arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed will be completed by 10 April.
Speaking at a press conference held at HRCM office today, Commission member Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that statements have been collected from the relevant groups, but completion of the investigations is delayed because more information is required.
He said that in addition to the arrest of Judge Abdulla, the Commission is also investigating activities conducted against human rights on the nights of 6 and 7 February in Male’ and those conducted on 8 February in Male’ and Addu. All investigations will be completed by 10 April and steps will be taken against those responsible.
“We said earlier that the investigation into Judge Abdulla’s case will be completed by the end of this month. However this has been delayed as more information is required, but it will be completed by 10 April,” Abdul Kareem said.
He said that all involved groups cooperated in the investigation of Judge Abdulla’s case.
In addition, following receipt of information that several women detained on 19 March had been exposed to violence, the Commission has visited these women in Dhoonidhoo and conducted inquiries. The case is also being investigated by the Commission, and its investigation report will be published soon.
Statements were obtained from former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Defence Minister Thalhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaan, and former Home Minister Hassan Afeef regarding the arrest of Judge Abdulla.
