The cabinet of ministers has held over four hours of extensive debate on the death penalty regulation, says Home Minister.

Home Minister: Lethal injections will be used to carry out the death penalty. The penalty will be executed in Maafushi Prison. Death penalty will be implemented in the presence of the Commissioner of Prisons, a lawyer from the Prosecutor General’s Office, a medical doctor and three representatives from the public.

Home Minister Umar Naseer assured that the government will fully respect the decisions of the courts and that the government will neither seek to expedite nor delay a death penalty case.

The regulation says that, following the implementation of the death penalty, the body of the deceased shall be handed over to convict’s family for burial. If the family refuses to accept the body, burial of the deceased shall fall upon the State.

The regulation requires the Ministry of Islamic Affairs to collect statements from the immediate family members of the victim, on the day of the implementation of the death penalty.

The regulation states that, if a pregnant woman is convicted of death penalty, implementation of the penalty shall be postponed for two years from the date of the birth of the child.
