Immigration Department decides not to release deposit for missing illegal immigrants

Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced that it will no longer release the deposit kept for illegal immigrants after they are reported missing.

This was announced by Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim at a press conference held at Huravee Building today, to inaugurate the provision of several immigration services from one location.

Nazim said that several efforts will be made this year to strengthen immigration services, including empowering employment agencies. He said that these steps will be taken after discussion with all parties involved in bringing foreign labour into the country.

Nazim said that procedures will be put in place to ensure that private individuals are no longer able to bring foreigners into the country for employment. He said that this must be done through relevant agencies.

He further said that if an illegal immigrant goes missing, Immigration Department will no longer release his deposit and moreover, strict action will be taken against agents who bring in immigrants unlawfully.

“Having foreign labourers work for low wages has negative impact on the economy. We will identify the people involved in this, repatriate the immigrants, and take action against everyone involved,” said Nazim.
