President’s Office has reopened application for the post of Prosecutor General (PG), after Maumoon Hameed, nominated by the president, was rejected by the parliament.

Spokesperson at President’s Office Ibrahim Muaz Ali said that application is open till 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, 24 April.

Muaz said that applications will be reviewed and a nomination will be sent for approval by the parliament in about one week.

Five people applied when the President’s Office opened application for the post of PG for the first time. They were Maumoon Hameed, former Minister of Tourism Mariyam Zulfa, Deputy PG Hussain Shameem, Lawyer at PG Office Aishath Fazna, and Lawyer Binma Ismail Waheed.

Article 221 of the Constitution states the person appointed as PG by the president shall be approved by a majority of the total membership of the parliament.

Majority of the total membership of the parliament is 39, and the motion to appoint Maumoon Hameed as PG was voted in favour by 36 MPs in parliament.
