Supreme Court has ruled that the establishment of a Bar Association, and the operation of this association in activities related to the justice system of the Maldives, will not be allowed.
This was decided during the Supreme Court Judges Council meeting on 9 April, and has been informed to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Deputy Director General of Ministry of Home Affairs Is’haag Ahmed said that following the letter from Supreme Court in relation to this matter, Bar Association has been notified to change its name and inform the ministry within 14 days.
Supreme Court was not available for a comment at the time of press.
Maldives Bar Association, a non-governmental organization representing local lawyers, is headed by lawyer, former Attorney General Husnu Al-Suood.
