Man injured in assault in Maafushi Prison dies

Ibrahim Aazar, who sustained serious injuries in an assault among prisoners in Maafushi Prison two months ago, has died while being treated in a hospital in India.

Aazar never regained consciousness following the assault, which took place on 24 February.

A member of Aazar’s family said that he died at Ananthapuri Hospital in India at 12:15 p.m. local time.

The family member said that when Aazar was taken to Male’ following the assault on the night of 24 February, marks made by a sharp object were visible on his neck and he had bled heavily through his mouth and nose.

He said that Aazar was taken to India for treatment as advised by local doctors after being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in IGMH.
