Leaders can remain in power depending on how their promises are fulfilled: President Nasheed

No leader can remain in power in the Maldives in the future unless promises to the people are fulfilled, said President Nashee today. Speaking in the official function to mark the Maldives’ Independence Day, the President said that the greatest freedom and the greatest scene to be seen in a country would be the fulfillment of a leader’s promises. He said that the Maldives was now witnessing such a spectacle.

The President said that the real foundation of independence rested on the political system of a country, and that such a system on a multiparty basis came to the Maldives only recently. He said that the country’s hopes for a better future with the new political system were very much alive.

“The hope to become the President of the country is something that any citizen can harbor. The Maldives is a nation that is carved out of the geographical boundaries clearly defined, and its owners are all the Maldivians; not the only ones that are alive but also the ones who have long been dead and who are yet to come into the world”, said the President.

President Nasheed said the Maldives was already getting a remarkable recognition in the international community considering the insignificance of the country in size. He said that the country was securing a position of trust and confidence especially in the UN community, which he said was an indication as to the important role the country played in world affairs.

“In advocating for environmental concerns and human rights, the Maldives stands at the top. A better example in turning a country over to democracy than the one we have displayed here recently would be really rare. Other countries of the world are looking up to the Maldives’ example in following the path of democracy, as can be seen in the Middle East and other parts of the world. As such, I congratulate the Maldivian people”, said the President.
