Seaplane service will begin next month: Maldivian

Maldivian has said that its seaplane service will begin next month.

Head of Administration of Island Aviation Ali Nashath told Sun Online that preparations to commence this service are almost complete, and efforts are under way to construct a floating jetty at the airport.

“Seaplane service will begin next month. A date will be announced very soon,” Nashath told Sun Online.

The first seaplane acquired by Maldivian, a DH-6 Twin Otter Aircraft, arrived in the Maldives last week.

Competition has been non-existent in the local seaplane market since the two companies providing seaplane services Maldivian Air Taxi (MAT) and Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) were acquired and merged by New York’s Blackstone Group. Maldivian hopes to re-introduce competition with its penetration into this market.

Maldivian commenced efforts to provide seaplane service in October 2013.
