Parliament sessions to begin on Monday

Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid has said that Parliament sessions will begin on Monday, even though political parties have not come to an agreement on amendments to parliament regulation.

Parliament Office said today that the agenda for Monday’s session will be sent to members on Thursday, and that the Parliament General Committee will continue efforts to amend the parliament regulation. Once completed, the report will be sent to the Speaker, and Parliament sessions will proceed meanwhile.

Parliament Office also said that the decision for the Parliament to convene on Monday was made after discussions between Speaker of Parliament Shahid and Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim. Shahid thanked Nazim for his efforts and support in the discussions held between party leaders.

Nazim recently said on DhiTV that forced disruption of a Parliament session will not be allowed in the future, and that any such efforts will be categorized as obstructing the Speaker of Parliament from carrying out his duties.

“Forced disruption of the Parliament will not be tolerated. As someone who chairs the Parliament, I can tell you that this is obstructing the state-appointed Speaker of Parliament from carrying out his duties. We do not intend to give the opportunity for anyone to do that in the future,” Nazim said, referring to MDP’s attempts to obstruct the Parliament opening session.
