Security strengthened in Addu City ahead of Challenge Cup

Police have held discussions with relevant authorities regarding strengthening security in Addu City, the venue for Group B matches in Challenge Cup scheduled for next month.

The discussions took place from Wednesday to Friday when Head of Central Operations Command Chief Superintendent of Police Ismail Naveen visited Addu City.

Discussions were focused on strengthening security in Zone Stadium in Addu City, closing off roads if necessary, and taking measures to ensure security in stadiums during practice sessions.

In addition, police have also held discussion with senior officials of Herethere Resort, which will provide accommodation for the teams and officials of Challenge Cup.

Police said that in addition to discussions, they have also visited Zone Stadium, Hethere Resort, and practice stadiums to identify measures to be taken to ensure security.

Maldives, which is in Group A, will play against Myanmar in the opening match on 18 May, against Kirgizstan on 21 May, and against Palestine on 23 May.

Group A matches will be held at Galolhu Stadium, while Group B matches will be held at Zone Stadium in Addu City. Countries in Group B are Turkmenistan, Philippines, Afghanistan, and Laos.

The AFC Challenge Cup was first held in 2006 in Bangladesh, then in 2008 in India, then in 2010 in Sri Lanka, and most recently in 2012 in Nepal.
