Ministry of Home Affairs has published a list of detention facilities in the Maldives, as required by the Anti-Torture Act, ratified by the president in December last year.
Places of detention revealed as police stations and custodial run under the Maldives Police Service include; police stations in atolls Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, Baa, Lhaviyani, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaalu, Vaavu, Meemu Faafu, Dhaalu, Laamu, Gaafu Alif, Fuvahmulah and Hulhumeedhoo, along with Addu custodial in Addu City, Male’ Custodial (Atholhuvehi) in the capital Male', Dhoonidhoo Custodial, Vilimale’ police station and Hulhumale’ police station.
The prisons, run under the Maldives Correctional Service include; Maafushi Prison, Asseyri Prison in Kaafu Hinmafushi, Male’ Prison and Hulhumale’ Prison.
Additional places of detention include; Custodial Reception and Diagnostic Centre (CRDC), section allocated for juvenile males in Hinmafushi Prison and section allocated for juvenile females in Maafushi Prsion.
The Anti-torture Bill was ratified by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on 23 December 2013. The law came into force after three months from ratification on 23 March 2014. As required, Ministry of Health and Gender has also published a list of places for people under State care. The law also instructs the Department of Immigration and Emigration to publish a list of detention facilities for migrant workers in the Maldives.
