National Institute of Education (NIE) has started a 12-day program on Sunday to train teachers to cater for children with special needs.
The training seeks to equip teachers in the atolls with special needs training, to enable them to identify special needs children early in their lives and provide the proper attention in their education. The training is participated by 10 teachers.
“Teachers from (atolls) Noonu, Baa, Faafu, Thaa and Kaafu Maafushi school are participating in the training program. Two teachers each, from the five atolls. Each participant will complete a 80-hour inclusive education training program,” NIE revealed.
The teachers will learn a number of skills, including techniques to identify; characteristics of disabilities, the different divisions and ranks for children with special needs, successful teaching methods for children with disabilities, how to assemble an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for special needs classes, amongst other skills.
First phase of an Early Intervention program for teachers in Fuvahmulah and Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi will also continue from 6 to 24 April, conducted by NIE.
