Only 3,854 expats in pension scheme so far: MPAO

With some 3,854 workers registered so far, support to enroll expatriate workers in Retirement Pension Scheme is low, the Director of Maldives Pension Administration Office (PMAO) Ismail Sujau said today.

Follows an amendment bill seeking to overturn the mandatory enrollment of expatriate workers in the retirement pension scheme, MPAO today extended the enrollment deadline to 15 April. The deadline was previously set to Monday, 31 March.

The amendment to Article 12 (b) of the Maldives Pension Act was submitted by ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) MP Abdul Azeez Jamaal Aboobakuru last Saturday, stating that the majority of expatriate workers move overseas to retire and thus, mandatory inclusion of workers defeats the purpose of the retirement pension scheme.
