Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor has said that former President Mohamed Nasheed should be accorded the necessary privileges.
Speaking on DhiTV, Azima Shakoor said last night that according to the constitution, if a president did not complete the full term of five years, he should be accorded all privileges except for the financial allowance.
“According to the constitution, very person should be accorded what’s rightfully his. I have talked about this before. Nasheed should be accorded the security and protection as guaranteed by the constitution. The government will ensure that this is done,” Azima Shakoor said.
She also said that a former president should be provided four types of allowances – a salary, a housing allowance, an allowance to carry out activities which benefit the society, and security. Of these allowances, the salary of Rf 50,000 will not be accorded to a president who did not complete the five-year term.
Housing allowance, allowance to carry out activities which benefit the society, and security must be accorded to any former president, regardless of the duration he served as president.
Article 3(a) of the law governing privileges and security for a former President states that a president who serves one term should be provided a monthly financial allowance of Rf 50,000; and a president who serves two terms should be provided Rf 75,000 monthly.
Article 107(a) of the constitution defines a presidential term as five years.
