Police officer involved in 24 kg drug case suspended

The police officer involved in the smuggling of 24 kgs of drugs to the Maldives via an Iranian fishing vessel has been suspended.

Sources have told Sun Online that the police officer, arrested alongside 18 suspects including four Maldivians, was suspended on 11 March.

A police media official told Sun Online today that due action will be taken against the police officer in line with police regulations.

He did not confirm if any action has been taken against the officer.

On 12 March, police arrested fourteen foreigners and four Maldivians for smuggling 24 kgs of drugs into the country.

Two of them were arrested while disembarking to Hulhumale’ from the dinghy carrying drugs, which they collected from the Iranian vessel about 30 nautical miles off Alifu Alifu Mathiveri.

Police said that the street value of the drugs would be around MVR 36 million, and if it is sold with added powder, the street value could reach MVR 100 million.
