EC meetings to be chaired by Faroog

Elections Commission (EC) has appointed its member Mohamed Faroog to chair its meetings in the absence of a President and Vice President.

EC Media Officer Aishath Shifana Ahmed told Sun Online that this was decided by the commission yesterday.

“This decision follows Article 46 of the EC Regulation, which states that in the event that the President and Vice President are unable to chair the commission’s meetings, a person must be appointed to chair meetings,” he said.

A recent Supreme Court ruling disqualifying the commission’s President Fuad Thaufeeg and Vice President Ahmed Fayaz Hassan from their posts has left the commission with only three members.

President’s Office has nominated replacements for Fuad and Fayaz, and sent the names to the parliament for approval. Parliament sittings have since then however, been suspended by Speaker Abdulla Shahid.
