JSC members refuse to attend committee

Some members of Judicial Service Commission (JSC) have refused to attend Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions after being summoned this afternoon.

JSC members were asked to attend the committee for questioning regarding JSC’s procedure on investigating issues related to judges.

In a letter sent to the parliament today, JSC said that its members had decided after discussion that they had not been given enough time to prepare their response to the committee.

JSC also said in the letter that its members will, within the limits of the law, answer the committee’s inquiries once they are summoned with enough time to prepare their response.

The JSC members who attended the committee today were JSC President Dr Mohamed Latheef and JSC Member Shuaib Abdul Rahman.

Dr Latheef pointed out at the meeting as well, that they had not been given enough time as required by law to prepare their response.

The committee decided today to allow two days, and summon JSC members again for Friday.
