Members of the Elections Commission, including Fuad Thaufeeq and Ahmed Fayaz who were sacked by the Supreme Court on Sunday - attended a hearing of the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions today.
Following a motion by Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed, the meeting of the opposition-majority committee was closed off from the media for 15 minutes. However, the Elections Commission members had left the committee when the media was allowed back insdie the meeting room. Details of the meeting are unclear.
The decision to summon the EC members to today’s committee was made during an extraordinary meeting of the committee last night do discuss the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the two EC members.
Supreme Court on Sunday sentenced to disqualify Elections Commission’s president Fuad Thaufeeg and his deputy Ahmed Fayaz as members of commission, for disparaging court procedures. Fuad also received a six-month jail sentence, suspended for three years.
