Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim have said that the removal of President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg and Vice President of Elections Commission Ahmed Fayaz by Supreme Court was unconstitutional.

This was stated in a letter sent to the President, Chief Justice, and Attorney General by the parliament today.

The letter states that the removal of Elections Commission President and Vice President was conducted in violation of the procedures prescribed in the Constitution and the Elections Commission Act.

The parliament said in a statement today that its stand on the Supreme Court verdict is based on advice given on the matter by the Parliament Counsel General.

It further states that according to the Constitution and Elections Commission Act, appointment and dismissal of members to the Elections Commission must be conducted by the parliament.
