Maldives Police Service (MPS) has advised the public not to obstruct campaign teams from going ashore certain islands as a means to obstruct campaigns.
Police have been receiving an increasing number of complaints regarding such incidents, revealed MPS in a statement today. Freedom of movement and the freedom of expression are fundamental rights guaranteed in the constitution and it is an offence to obstruct campaigns under the Elections Act, cautioned the Maldives Police Service.
In their statement, Police further advised the candidates, representatives, supporters, political parties and the general public to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in all islands, during the lead-up to the parliamentary election scheduled for 22 March.
