President of Maldives Media Council resigns

Husham Mohamed has resigned from the post of President of Maldives Media Council.

Husham confirmed his resignation to Sun Online, and said that the council has made several sacrifices to promote media freedom, however, the Maldives Media Council Law does not give the council enough authority.

He said that efforts made by the council to meet with President Yameen Abdul Gayoom have also been unsuccessful.

“Given these reasons, I see no reason for me to remain in this post. So I have resigned,” he said.

Husham was elected as President of Maldives Media Council, following the resignation of Ibrahim Khaleel, with 10 votes in favour in August 2013. Prior to that, he acted as the council’s Vice President.
