MP Alhan stand as independent candidate for Feydhoo seat

Incumbent Feydhoo MP Alhan Fehmy has decided to stand for re-election as an independent candidate, after losing the primary and failing to secure a ticket from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

On Saturday night, MP Alhan was stabbed in the lower back while at a public restaurant and airlifted to Sri Lanka for emergency treatment over fears that he might be paralyzed from the wait down.

Speaking to Sun from Colombo today, MP Alhan said he does not accept the MDP Feydhoo primary and the he will file the case in court as soon as he returns to the capital.

“I don’t believe that MDP’s current decisions are justified. So I have decided to stand for this constituency as an independent. Decisions are being made to the will and influence of a certain group,” MP Alhan said, speaking from his hospital in Colombo where he remains admitted after surgery.

Alhan also noted that MDP’s Feydhoo branch had published a report alleging that the constituency’s primary was not held in a conducive atmosphere.

With 154 votes, the sitting MP Alhan came in third in the primary. Mohmaed Nihad won the election with 316 votes and Ahmed Mirjaz came second with 186 votes.

Deadline for application for parliamentary seats will expire on Tuesday, 11 February. The parliamentary election is scheduled for 22 March.
