Second round may be necessary for some constituencies

The preliminary results of the Local Council Election announced thus far have suggested that second rounds might be necessary for several constituencies.

President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg told Sun Online today that the run-offs, if necessary, will be held between the two bottom candidates.

He said that second rounds were held for some constituencies also in 2011.

Fuad said that the constituencies that require second rounds will be confirmed once the official results are announced.

He said that the second rounds will be held before the Parliamentary Elections, and that time will be given for the run-off candidates to campaign.

A total of 2,463 candidates contested in the Local Council Election, made up of Island Council and Atoll Council Elections.
