British High Commissioner calls on the President

British High Commissioner to the Maldives John Rankin has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

At the meeting held yesterday at the President’s Office, President Yameen and High Commissioner Rankin discussed Maldives-UK bilateral relations and exchanged views on ways to further enhance cooperation between the two countries, said the President’s Office.

Briefing High Commissioner Rankin on government strategies to improve the country’s current economic situation, President Yameen noted that economic transformation was on top of his Government’s agenda and informed the High Commissioner about the prospective projects for investments in the Maldives.

President Yameen also briefed the High Commissioner on the need to impress upon the EU the pertinence of extending GSP Plus facilities to the Maldives for a further period, to ensure that the country’s fishery exports could remain competitive in European markets.

High Commissioner Rankin informed the President of the British government’s commitment to working with the Maldives on issues of mutual interest and inquired about possible areas in which Britain could support the Maldives’ developmental efforts in the time ahead.
