CMAG

The statement released by Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) expressing concern over the lack of progress in discussions aimed at holding an early election is in the interest of one political party, according to People’s Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

At a press conference held at the PPM Office this afternoon, PPM Interim Vice President Abdul Raheem Abdulla noted the attention paid to holding an early election in the statement by CMAG.

He said that the current situation in Maldives does not allow for an early election, and that it would also require constitutional changes.

He further said that holding an early election because a certain group of people want it, is not the best thing for the country. He thanked Commonwealth for monitoring the situation in the Maldives, but advised them against protecting the interests of just one party.

In the statement, Commonwealth urged holding an early election to allow people to express their will and for the current Maldivian government to obtain approval of the international community with regard to its legitimacy.

Even though several political parties had indicated suitable dates for holding the early election, PPM had not indicated any date during the discussions.
