Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that only 16 voters’ lists remain to be signed by the party for the upcoming Local Council Election.
Speaking at a press conference at PPM Office today, PPM campaign official Mohamed Asmali said that signing was completed for all but 16 lists of four constituencies by 8:00 p.m. last night.
He said that all the lists were sent by email by Elections Commission 10 days ago for verification.
“Elections Commission sent the lists about 10 days ago for verification. We checked the lists before signing them. But at around 7:30 p.m. last night, the commission sent 16 new lists by email, and said that they had been revised,” he said.
He said that the 16 new lists have to be checked, and that time is required to sign them.
“This is a problem that involves the rights of several citizens. We never made any attempt to obstruct an election. Since the presidential election, we’ve been saying that we can’t sign lists without checking them. We won’t sign, and they can proceed as they wish. If we’re given enough time, we’re prepared to check the lists,” he said.
