President leaves capital on PPM campaign trip

President Abdulla Yameen has left Male' to three islands in Meemu and Dhaalu atoll this morning to gather support for Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidates standing for the 18 January Local Council Election.

Speaking to the media before his departure today, President Yameen said: “I will be briefed on development projects in the islands. The main purpose is to check on the people’s condition. Also because I have promised I will make a trip to the islands before heading abroad,” President Yameen said.

This is President Yameen’s first trip to the islands after assuming office in November last year. He also said today that he has a number of trips planned for the islands in the days to come.

The President made his first state visit to India on 1 January and has announced an official visit to Sri Lanka later this month.
