Launching seaplane service is immediate target, says new IAS chairman

Ahmed Shafeeu, the newly appointed chairman of the government aviation company Island Aviation Services (IAS) has said the company’s most immediate target would be launch a domestic seaplane service.

Shafeeu told Sun today that preparations are underway and that AIS has already ordered aircrafts to launch the service. The company has also acquired the necessary area for flight operations, he said.

“It is one of our most desired targets to establish seaplane services, to provide easier transportation for the public. But I cannot tell you a specific date,” Shafeeu said.

The former Fisheries Minister said that during his tenure, he will try to further expand the existing fleet of Maldivian, the country’s national carrier.

“I am still consulting heads of the company, trying to understand it,” said Shafeeu, who was appointed to the chairman post on Tuesday.
