Indian Foreign Secretary calls on President Yameen

Foreign Secretary of India Sujatha Singh has called on President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

According to the President's Office, President and the Foreign Secretary discussed ways to enhance the existing close friendly relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, the Indian Foreign Secretary highlighted that Indo-Maldives relations were always on a firm footing during Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s tenure, and that ties between the two countries were strengthened on the basis of important underlying principles.

She went on to note that relations between the two countries were unique and that the securities of both the countries were indeed tied together. She expressed confidence that bilateral relations between India and Maldives would be further strengthened during President Yameen’s tenure.

Thanking Foreign Secretary for the excellent arrangements and warm hospitality, President Yameen emphasized that India would always be a special companion to the Maldives and that, in shaping Maldivian foreign policy, India’s interests and sensitivities would continue to be accorded the highest respect.

Furthermore, the President recalled the mutual support that the two countries had extended at important international fora, and in particular when contesting for elected seats of International organizations.

President Yameen assured the Indian Foreign Secretary of his keenness to enhancing ties with India on a plethora of issues.
