Ministry to provide resource teachers to schools lacking Quran teachers

Ministry of Education has said that resource teachers will be provided to schools that do not have enough Quran teachers.

Permanent Secretary at Education Ministry Abdul Muhsin Mohamed said that only fourteen applications were received following the second announcement seeking Quran teachers.

He said that 26 Quran teachers are still required, and efforts are ongoing to fill these posts.

“We will assign resource teachers to these 26 posts, who are conducting Quran classes or carrying out similar work. We will employ them on hourly basis,” he said.

Education Ministry has said as part of its 100-day road map that this new academic year, Quran will be made a compulsory subject for grades 1 to 7 in all schools.

To achieve this, the ministry has made two announcements seeking 69 Quran teachers.

Muhsin said that teachers will be provided to all schools before the start of the academic year in two weeks.

He said that priority will be given to Maldivian teachers and foreign teachers will be employed for the remaining slots, and that more foreign teachers are waiting on standby than required.

“About 300 teacher posts have become vacant for next year. Maldivian teachers will fill about 100 posts, and the remaining posts will be filled by foreign teachers. We are providing teachers to all schools, and assigning foreign teachers where there are not enough Maldivians,” he said.

Muhsin said that efforts are also ongoing to provide teachers for special needs children.
