Malé City Council has today decided to extend the period of lease on Lonuziyaaraikolhu Area, also known as the Victory Square, for the political rallies of the Maldivian Democratic Party until the end of coming June.

The decision was made in a meeting of the City Council held today, by a majority vote of sitting Councilors.

Councilor Ibrahim Shujau said that the extension was granted upon request by the Maldivian Democratic Party. He also said that he and Mohamed Hameed, the only non-MDP Councilor in the Council, voted against the extension.

Shujau also said that the lease was extended on condition that MDP should not carry out any additional activities after 12 midnight in any other areas of Malé.

“The Council decided that MDP should not carry out activities such as motorbike rallies in Malé after 12 o’clock midnight. They can stay at the Lonuziyaaraikolhu, and the extension is set to expire with June”, said Shujau.

When asked about the decision, Ali “Maizan Alibe” Manik, Mayor of Malé City, said that he could only make comment on the decisions made in the Council when those decisions were officially communicated to concerned parties.

MDP started a continuous rally at Lonuziyaaraikolhu, under the theme “Journey of Justice”, on the 17th of last month. Malé City Council had previously given the area to MDP until the end of this month.
