GIP council decides to dissolve the party

Governing council of former president Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s Gaumee Ithihad Party (GIP) has decided to dissolve the party.

GIP council member Ahmed Thaufeeq (Topi) told Sun that the decision was made unanimously at a council meeting held last night.

“President Dr Mohamed Waheed chaired [the council meeting]. The resolution to dissolve the party was passed unanimously by all members,” Thaufeeq said.

He said that the decision follows sentiments that the current political atmosphere does not allow for small parties to maneuver in the Maldives. He said the members also believe that dissolving the party will save the government the sums it spends for a small party such as GIP.

Thaufeeq said the necessary documents for dissolution of the party will be filed at the Elections Commission tomorrow.

GIP is the second party to dissolve itself in the Maldives. Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), founded by former Attorney General Dr Mohamed Munavvar, dissolved itself on 11 December 2013.
