DRP welcomes capable new members into party leadership: Thasmeen

Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, leader of main opposition Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) said today that his party would willingly welcome capable new members into party leadership. He said that his party had a vision to include academically capable individuals in its vanguard in order to enhance efforts to make the Maldives a better country.

Speaking in a special function held in Sh. Funadhoo to mark DRP’s 6th anniversary, Thasmeen said that DRP’s doors were open to all who had not yet joined various political parties. “We have some academically competent and experienced people among us who are yet to join any political parties. Our thinking is to give them space to come into DRP and participate in the headship of the party”, Thasmeen said.

Thasmeen said that DRP would begin a special program to visit various islands of the country in order to get firsthand knowledge of the needs of the people in order to make plans for a manifesto for the upcoming 2013 presidential elections. He said that the purpose of the program was to understand the needs and hopes of the people so that DRP would become a party of the people, working for the people.

“We already know the situation of the country. However, we need to meet the people often and understand their hopes and concerns. Before 2013 we must make our decisions on what we should and would offer to them. I would like to say that we will thus begin a program of visiting various islands, as part of our preparations for the upcoming election”, Thasmeen said.

In his speech in the function in Funadhoo, Thasmeen accused President Nasheed of distributing uninhabited islands and other resources of the country to his party activists and close individuals according to their own agendas. He said that these dealings were made in a way that profited President Nasheed and his party’s political interests without any consideration for national concerns.
