Ministry green-lights Male

Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has given the go-ahead to Male’ City Council allowing West Gate Assets Private Limited to develop and manage Male’ west harbour area for a period of 25 years.

Also known as T-Jetty area, Male' west harbour and the surrounding area was initially leased to West Gate in August this year, but the project was halted after the government refused to issue the required permits and sought the court to revoke the lease.

Member of the Male’ City Council Ibrahim Sujau told Sun today that the council has agreed to continue the development project with some government proposed controls.

“In principle there are some controls. This includes the height of the structures, and it will continue with other changes [imposed] by the Housing Ministry,” Sujau said.

Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that after consultation with the Attorney General, the Ministry has allowed the necessary permits along with certain conditions, controls and designs proposed by the Ministry.

Sujau said they are trying to begin work, but said it is not possible to predict a date.

West Gate Consultant Ismail Firag earlier said the area will be developed in several phases and that the company plans to establish goods handling facilities, cafés, parking zones and petrol sheds in the harbour area.
