Minister of Education Dr Aishath Shiham has said that from next year onwards, students who pass three subjects in their A’level exams will have the opportunity to go for higher education.
Aishath Shiham said this while providing information on the ministry’s projects for the next 100 days, at a press conference held at the President’s Office today.
“The manifesto states that higher education opportunities will be facilitated for students who pass three subjects. This will begin with the new academic year. This means that students who pass three subject or more in their A’level exams will have the chance to go for higher education,” she said.
She said that with the new academic year starting in January, the curriculum will be changed to include religious and national studies.
She also said that new opportunities will be facilitated for children with special needs, and that special education will be available in five schools.
The minister said that two centres will also be in the atolls for special needs children.
She said that by the beginning of the new academic year every school will have a Quran teacher, and that 74 Quran teachers are required to achieve this.
Efforts are also under way to introduce Arabic as a subject in several schools, she said.
She referred to preschools currently being run by councils, and said that this will be changed in the future as per the wishes of the people.
