There were 5,699 marriages and 3,011 divorces in 2012, says Department of National Planning

The Department of National Planning has said in its Statistical Yearbook 2013, released on Wednesday, that there were 5,699 marriages and 3,011 divorces in the country in 2012.

The report shows that both marriages and divorces decreased in 2012 compared with 2011. The percentage of marriages that ended up in divorce, however, increased; and this figure has been increasing since 2002.

The report states that the population at the end of last year stood at 330,652, made up of 167,057 men and 163,595 women.

The population is also made up of 32,019 children below the age of 5; 55,577 children between the ages of 6 and 14; 141,056 people between the ages of 15 and 34; 85,685 people between the ages of 35 and 65; and 16,015 people above the age of 65.

There were 7,431 births and 1,165 deaths in 2012, and the life expectancy was 73 and 75 for men and women respectively, state the report.
