Colonel Ahmed Nilam has been dismissed from Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) today.
MNDF said that Nilam was demoted from Brigadier General to Colonel before he was dismissed, and that he was dismissed for failing to act according to the responsibilities, conduct and rules of MNDF, for repeatedly being involved in activities that no MNDF general officer should have been involved in, for revealing confidential information related to MNDF in violation of regulations, and for encouraging discord within MNDF.
Nilam was earlier suspended in relation to a statement he gave to Parliamentary Committee on Oversight of the Government regarding the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI).
Nilam’s dismissal comes shortly after he was summoned by the police for questioning, on suspicion of making misleading claims about the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali.
Nilam was promoted to Brigadier General in 2010.
Before Nilam was dismissed, Colonel Ali Zuhair was promoted to Brigadier General.
