Government will not influence the judiciary: President Yameen

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said the government will never push for a judicial case to achieve a particular outcome and has assured that the judiciary will remain free from government influence.

President made the statement while speaking at a rally named “Thank you nation” organized by the government coalition parties Sunday night. However, President Yameen said court process must be expedited.

“My government will never lean on the judicial system to seek a particular outcome in a particular case. But the cases need to be concluded quicker. This is a right guaranteed to every citizen by the constitution. An individual right,” President Yameen said.

The President called on all relevant authorities to expedite investigations and the judicial process, and vowed full support from the government to achieve this goal.

“I advice tonight for every child’s, every man’s case be concluded quickly. What we the State can do is provide resources,” President Yameen said.

Criticizing the parliament’s recent decisions to impeach heads of independent institutions, President Yameen said a person’s guilt must be proven before steps can be taken against him and said the parliament’s actions today are contrary this principles.

He also noted that parliamentarians and heads of institutions must be capable of delivering on their responsibilities and failure to perform will impede the overall progress of the country.

“When we consider to deliver these services to the people, and when we consider to implement the large projects on our manifestos, we want the institutions to work with us at the same pace. If not, Maldives will not see this overall progress,” President Yameen said.
